The motivation for 4-Hers from 30 counties is to compete for individual and team awards; however, underpinning the process includes lots of hours of preparation with coaches, fellow team members and parents.  The contest has four testing phases according to Sue Knautz, state 4-H Hippology and Horse Bowl coordinator.  Members take a written test, have two judging classes, view 10 skills station and finish with a team problem that requires an oral presentation.

Hippology, which is Greek for study of horse, is a very balanced skill based contest according Ben Gallup, state 4-H specialist.  The testing variety allows members to demonstrate speaking skills, judging expertise and ability to test.
