State Meats Judging Contest

Braving snow, ice and cold, 22 4-H members from Missouri 4-H county meats science projects converged upon the University of Missouri Columbia campus Saturday February 23rd for the annual State Meats Judging Contest. 

Dr. Bryon Wiegand, Animal Science Meats Science professor coordinated the event that included 30 cuts in an ID class, 3 retail cut classes, a wholesale class of whole hams and a class of pork carcasses.  Members that make the commitment to the pre-work practice are rewarded with a life time of food product selection knowledge. 

This year’s top senior team was Boone County.  The top junior team was Monroe County.  A special thanks to the Beef Industry Council for helping sponsor the contests senior team advancement to national to take place in October in Manhattan, Kansas.
