Profile of a 4-H Entrepreneur

November 2007

Logan Kennedy is a multi-talented young man who has learned many trade and entrepreneurial skills through 4-H and working on his parents’ farm. He has been a member of the Lucky Clover Club in Newton County for eight years. Logan has won local and regional prizes for raising steers, heifers, and pigs.

Logan has earned money as a feed additive dealer and rodeo stock contractor. Recently, Logan started using his skills as a welder to add another entrepreneurial venture: making clothesline poles for interested buyers.

He got his start welding for profit when Zandy Robinson, Newton County Extension office secretary, asked Logan if he could make her a set of clothesline poles. Word got out about Logan’s project and he soon received clothesline pole requests from other interested customers. He has made several sets so far and would like to take on other types of welding projects in the future. He has immediate plans to build a small trailer.

Besides welding, Logan has several animal related projects. He takes the money he earns from raising animals and reinvests it in 4-H and FFA projects. He is also earning enough money to save for college and a truck. Logan credits his parents, grandparents, 4-H leaders, FFA advisors, and agriculture teachers for helping and teaching him the skills he uses. Logan’s advice to other 4-H entrepreneurs is, “Make sure you know what you’re doing before you get real involved. Do your homework first.”
