What is the Sportfishing League?
The 4-H Sportfishing League is one component of a comprehensive
4-H Sportfishing Program/Project.
The competitive format of the 4-H youth fishing league was developed
only to serve as an incentive for adults and youth to actually “get
together and go fishing” and gain new skills and knowledge. It is meant to be friendly competition
with modest awards and recognition.
Our objective is to focus on the “process” not the
results.
A “team” is composed of 4 to 7 youth led or
“coached” by a 4-H certified volunteer. Teams fish local water at their own
convenience. Fish caught are
measured and the length recorded.
Inches are converted to points – with different conversion
factors for different species.
Non-fishing bonus points are awarded to teams for other learning
activities. A
“complete” season is based upon 5 different fishing
sessions.
Teams and individuals must observe all Missouri Fishing
Regulations. Fish recorded must have
been caught by legal means and in-season(appropriate for location &
species). “Slot length”
fish are eligible for recording.
This is a sportfishing program, therefore, only fish
caught by rod(or pole)& reel, using bait or lure are eligible. Other legal means such as trotline,
gigging, snagging, limb lines, etc. are not eligible for Fishing League
competition, though are suitable as a supplemental activity for the team.
Anglers may keep their catch to eat if all other Missouri regulations
are met. However, fish should only
be kept if it is certain that they will be eaten and not wasted.
4-H Sportfishing is an outreach of Missouri 4-H Youth Development Programs,
but relies upon state and community partners for implementation. Current
state partners include: the Missouri Department of Conservation, Aquatic
Resource Education; MDC Division of Fisheries; and the Conservation
Federation of Missouri.
The Missouri 4-H
Sportfishing League is open to all youth of Missouri, but enrollment in 4-H is
required to participate.
