The state Shooting Sports Contest is the
culminating event for 4-H Shooting Sports members through out Missouri. It is the conclusion of a year of
instruction and practice in one or more of the shooting disciplines. The State Contest provides an opportunity
for 4-H members to demonstrate skills and knowledge, track progress toward
personal goals, compare their proficiency with others, and to enjoy a fun
day outdoors with family and friends.
The Shooting Sports State Contest is the largest
official 4-H sponsored state event in Missouri. More than 800 4-H members from more than
71 different counties participate annually.
Yes, it is “competition” but we try to minimize
the competition portion of the event and emphasize the “participation”
portion. The top 5 individuals and
also high scoring county teams are recognized. There is no minimum
qualifying score to achieve or any regional or county event qualification
before participating in the State Contest.
4-H members of any level of experience and proficiency are
encouraged to enter the state contest.
The only restrictions are:
·
4-H member in
good standing in your county program
·
Enrolled in
the discipline entered and under the institution of a 4-H certified leader
in that discipline.
·
Must have
shot a simulation of the state event in which entered; that is the same
course of fire, same distance, same targets, same rules, etc. same as the
state event.

official state contest on Saturday
Directions
Directions from Columbia: Interstate
70 East (approximately 9 miles) to the Millersburg Exit # 137. Go North.
Go approximately 1.6 miles and the road splits, take road to the
left. Cedar
Creek Rod and Gun Club will be located on the left-hand
side of the road.
Parking space is critical. Please combine rides as much as
possible. This year we are to have a
supplemental parking area across the road to the north of the club.
Procedures
The
state office will return the necessary registration materials directly to the 4-H Members before the
contest. How much before? Depends upon how complete, accurate, and
timely the registrations are received. This will include nametags,
tentative schedules, instructions, etc.
There will be no central registration at the State Contest.
Participants should report directly to the Range Officer of each and all
disciplines or events in which participating immediately upon arrival at
the contest site.
Check-in
There
is no central registration.
Report to the event/discipline range for which you have
pre-entered. Each range may be
accepting sign up differently.
Archery, Trap, and BB/Pellet Rifle participants will have
pre-assigned shooting order with approximate times. 22 rifle allows participants lots of
flexibility to choose and sign up for different relays (though first relay
is reserved for participants with multiple entries). The point is: participants should
report to all appropriate event ranges upon arrival and determine their
procedure. Parents or coaches should
do this. Members, especially
younger children do not understand the process well enough to make
decisions as to the needed priority for an event
back to top
Multiple Entries
4-H
members may enter a maximum of two (2) events with no restrictions on which
disciplines. Participants with
multiple entries need to report to each range on arrival and ASAP to
review possible scheduling conflicts and plan how to get to every
event. The first relay for .22 rifle
will be reserved for those participants with multiple entries (if not
schedule early for trap or archery)– no one entered in .22 only should plan
on shooting in the first relay.
However, if the first relay does not fill, then any participant may
complete the line.
Shared Equipment
Sharing equipment among participants is within 4-H
guidelines, but it can cause scheduling problems. The small-bore rifle events are
especially affected. Do not have
more than two youth share the same equipment. The coach of the youth that will be
sharing equipment should see the range officer before the contest begins-
to help schedule participants as efficiently as possible. Shared equipment is to remain on the same
range. Please indicate participants
sharing equipment on the event entry form.
T-Shirts
Custom T-shirts for this years 4-H
Shooting Sports State event will be available. The costs of the T-shirts are $10.00
each, payable with the pre-registration.
The shirts will be available for pick-up at the operations
desk in the Club House the day of the State’s Contest. On the Individual Registration Form you
will find a place to indicate the size (adult sizes) of T-shirt(s) desired,
total the money due for shirts ordered and sign where indicated. Shirts
must be picked up the day of the contest. The t-shirt is different each
year. Shirts must be pre-ordered, no
extra are available on contest day.
Parent
and Coach Information
You
must stress the importance of appropriate
conduct to your young people.
Inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated! Problems arise not so much with the
participants as with non‑participating brothers and sisters. You as a parent are still responsible for
your children and their conduct, even at the State Contest. All adults should feel free to (even an
obligation to) correct any child that is participating in this type of
behavior. Extra supervision will be
noticed this year. Please report any
incidences. Participants found
guilty of poor conduct will be disqualified and their score will not be
counted.
Non-participating
children should be under direct adult guidance at all times. They should not be allowed to run
unattended! This is a safety issue –
remember this is a gun range! Please stress the importance of not crossing
barrier tapes, range boundaries, etc.
All firearms
(including BB guns) must be cased at all times except when on the range and
ready to begin the contest.
Trash
on the ground is unacceptable. We
must all work at keeping the range and facilities as clean as
possible. Take care of your own
trash and be willing to pick up after others. We are “privileged” to use the Cedar
Creek Rod and Gun Club. It is our
responsibility to maintain that privilege by appropriate conduct.
