Home Environment

State Specialist: Alison Copeland

Do you walk into a room and know exactly what colors and what furniture would look good in the space? Do you know what paint color or wallpaper would brighten the room? How do you create a feeling of coziness in a family room?  Being an interior designer is all about making a house a home.  But what about starting with your own room? Can you select colors, textures, and accessories that will allow you to show off your personal style and enable you to take care of your room? If you know the basics, you can advance to wood finishing, learning principals of design, make sound furnishing purchase decisions of use software to create your ideal house.

Horses

State Specialist: Ben Gallup

Do you like horses? Do you want to learn more about horses? It does not matter if you have a horse or not because in this project you have the opportunity to learn about horses and how to care for one.  In the beginning level you will explore horse behavior, terms, breeds, identification, body parts, selection, grooming, saddling and bridling, safety and equipment.  In the intermediate levels you will have the opportunity to experience activities based around judging, presenting oral reasons, selection, unsoundness, tack, training, showing, trail riding, riding skills and horse health.  Experienced or advanced horseman will enjoy challenging activities including determining age, reading a feed tag, body condition scoring, identifying and treating equine diseases, reproduction, horsemanship, organizing a horse show, horse psychology and exploring horse careers.

Horticulture

Flowers

Greenhouses, flower arrangements, and flower beds, flowers can bring a smile to many faces. Enjoy activities an opportunities working with flowers inside and outside. Learn techniques in flower arranging, pest management, and plant science. If you live in a high-rise apartment or have a large yard this project has something fund for you! Experiences in this project may help you determine a future career or business venture!

Gardening

Get outside and dig in the soil, you can grow your own fruit and vegetable garden with this project. Create rows of vegetables and fruit that you enjoy and are good for you and your family! Learn basic gardening techniques, how to plan a garden, learn about career options and even venture into starting your own business.

Knitting

Sitting in front of a warm fire, knitting - is this a hobby you can take with you? You bet! Knitting is a wonderful craft to learn and it can be taken anywhere.  You will learn knitting techniques and tips and through the curriculum you will also have patterns for 11 knit projects.  These projects range from wearables, gifts for friends, backpack, blanket, bracelets and more.

Livestock Judging

Meats

State Specialist: Ben Gallup

There is nothing like a delicious country cured ham. Or what about the taste of barbecue just off the grill? Learning the process and skills to cure your own ham, identify different meat retail and wholesale cuts, selecting quality meat products and then knowing how to prepare it for a meal. These hands on activities and experiences will last you a lifetime.

Use of Borax is NOT an approved practice for curing hams.

Poultry

State Specialist: Ben Gallup

Identifying poultry parts, species and breeds, selection, exploring an egg, cooking an egg, feeding, handling, washing and showing are activities included in the 4-H poultry project. In the intermediate level you will learn how to read a feed tag, explore retail products, grade carcasses, select layers and poultry health. Advanced poultry members will develop leadership skills by planning a judging clinic, managing a flock, exploring careers, processing chickens, and conducting poultry games and discussing vales and ethics.

Rabbits

State Specialist: Ben Gallup

Weather you see rabbits as a soft and cuddly pet or a business opportunity, the rabbit project is flexible for your interest. Beginning level rabbits include activities that include selection, handling, breeds, parts, management, equipment, feeding, health, breeding and kindling. At the intermediate level through hands on activities you will learn how to select, judge, give oral reasons, show rabbits, tattoo, keep records and detect diseases. In the advanced level of the rabbit project you will have the opportunity to learn more about breeding, genetics, culling, determining pregnancy, designing a rabbitry, anatomy, teaching others, and registering a rabbit, and marketing your product. The rabbit pattern is a great model for identifying parts, determining sex, checking for disqualifications, practicing handling, trimming nails, showing, and many other management practices.
