Course Outline
Pre-Lesson:
Using the Technology
Lesson 1:
How Kids
Develop
This
lesson provides insight into the needs and interests of the youth you serve by helping you
understand: (1) the building blocks kids need for success, (2) characteristics that are
common to kids according to their age groups, and (3) environmental factors that influence
youth development.
Lesson 2:
Learning Through Experience
Life
skills are best learned when youth (and adults) have the opportunity to experience
activities, reflect upon their experience, and apply the concepts learned to other
situations. This experiential model of learning is
discussed in Lesson 2.
Lesson
3:
Kids as Resources
In
Lesson 3, you will learn how to see youth as resources by developing youth-adult
partnerships. Treating youth as partners instead of as recipients facilitates positive
youth development.
Lesson 4:
Managing Groups of Kids
Because
supervising and guiding youth has numerous challenges, Lesson 4 provides techniques and
suggestions for helping you create a safe and positive learning environment.
Lesson 5:
Working With Parents
and Other Adults
When working
with youth, you also deal with the adults in their lives. Lesson 5 discusses the benefits
and challenges of involving parents and other adults in youth serving organizations.
